The Selection Committee of the 9th Lamiraw Creative Writing Workshop (LCWW) named 19 fellows who will take part this year’s literary activity on November 6-9, 2012 at Northwest Samar State University in Calbayog City, Samar. Nineteen fellows made it to the shortlist of the Selection Committee. The writing fellows are:

Northern Samar

In observance of the World Mental Health Month in October with the theme Depression: A Global Crisis, the Foundation for Advancing Wellness, Instruction and Talents (AWIT) is launching DIONATEXT, a text (SMS) poetry (diona) writing contest.

The diona is a short pre-Hispanic poetic form composed of three versified rhyming lines. Each line consists of seven syllables expressing a complete thought. DIONATEXT entries must be written in Filipino and must express triumph against depression. Here is an example of a diona on depression:

Gaganapin ang kumperensiya sa ika-26 at 27 ng Oktubre, 2012 (Biyernes at Sabado) sa Escaler Hall ng Ateneo sa Loyola Heights, Quezon City.

The UST Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies, in cooperation with PEN International, Philippine Chapter will present Marne Kilates reading from his latest book, "Pictures as Poems and Other (Re)Visions)" [UST Publishing House, 2012] on September 29, 5 p.m., at the Solidaridad Bookstore, Padre Faura, Malate, Manila.

What is popular lit? Is it literature that has a popular following because it is easy to read? Is it literature that panders to popular taste? Is it literature created for the masses to help uplift them from their oppressive lives? The UST Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies is pleased to announce the revival of its “USTingan” Program, a series of round-table conversations on creative writing and contemporary literature.

Philippine Literature

Philippine literature is the literature associated with the Philippines and includes the legends of prehistory, and the colonial legacy of the Philippines. Most of the notable literature of the Philippines was written during the Spanish period and the first half of the 20th century in Spanish language. Philippine literature is written in Spanish,English,Tagalog,, and/or other native Philippine languages.

Tomas Pin pin wrote and printed in 1610 Librong Pagaaralan nang mga Tagalog nang Uicang Castilla, 119 pages designed to help fellow Filipinos to learn the Spanish language in a simple way. He is also credited with the first news publication made in the Philippines, "Successos Felices",



Fictionist, teacher, and critic Rosario Cruz-Lucero will be launching her latest book of stories La India, or Island of the Disappeared (UP Press) and Ang Bayan sa Labas ng Maynila: The Nation Beyond Manila (Ateneo Press), a book of critical essays on the literature of the Visayas and Mindanao, on September 28, 3-5 p.m., Finster Hall, Ateneo de Davao University.

The Philippines Graphic's special collectors' edition will hit bookstores and newsstands this Monday with an issue exclusively dedicated to National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin--the Philippines Graphic's first editor-in-chief and one of the country's most revered writers.

Four essays, nine short stories, three one-act plays, and eight collections of poetry are in contention for top honors in this year’s 2012 Premio Tomas Arejola sa Literaturang Bikolnon (PTALB).

Also in contention are three short stories for children and two one-act plays, this was announced by Carlos Arejola, chair of the nation-wide competition widely regarded as the premiere prize for writing in the Bikol language.
